How do I calculate relative humidity from temperature and dew point?

Open the relative humidity calculator and enter air temperature plus dew point from the same observation. The tool divides vapor pressure at the dew point by saturation vapor pressure at the air temperature and returns RH as a percentage.

Can I calculate air temperature from dew point and relative humidity?

Yes. Choose Air temperature, enter dew point and RH, and the calculator inverts the Magnus relationship to reconstruct dry-bulb temperature. At 100% RH, the result equals the dew point.

What dew point formula does the calculator use?

What is the difference between dew point and relative humidity?

Dew point is the temperature at which the air's current water vapor would reach saturation, so it is easier to compare as air temperature changes. Relative humidity is a percentage of saturation at the current air temperature and can rise or fall as the air cools or warms.

What dew point feels comfortable outdoors?

Comfort varies, but many people perceive dew points below about 60°F (16°C) as relatively comfortable. Dew points above 65°F (18°C) often feel humid, while values above 75°F (24°C) are commonly described as oppressive.

Does dew point predict window or surface condensation?

Condensation can begin when a surface cools to or below the surrounding air's dew point. Surface temperature, airflow, materials, thermal bridges, and local moisture still affect whether visible water forms.

Does 100% relative humidity always mean rain or fog?

No. It means the air is saturated under the stated temperature and vapor-pressure conditions. Cloud, fog, dew, frost, or precipitation also depends on cooling, condensation nuclei, vertical motion, surface conditions, and the depth of the saturated layer.

Why can relative humidity rise overnight without added moisture?

Cooler air has a lower saturation vapor pressure. If the actual water-vapor amount stays similar while temperature falls, the same moisture represents a larger percentage of saturation and RH rises toward 100%.

Can dew point be higher than air temperature?

Not under ordinary conditions at or below 100% relative humidity. A higher dew point implies inconsistent observations, mismatched units, or supersaturation, so the calculator asks you to check the inputs.

Why do two dew point calculators give slightly different results?

Calculators may use different Magnus constants, water-versus-ice conventions, rounding rules, or more detailed vapor-pressure standards. Source sensor precision can also be larger than the numerical difference between the results.

What happens below freezing: dew point or frost point?

Dew point commonly refers to saturation relative to liquid water, including supercooled water below 0°C. Frost point uses saturation over ice and can differ, so check the required convention for cold-weather technical work.

What pressure is used for moisture concentration results?

Volume and weight concentration estimates use standard sea-level pressure of 101,325 Pa. The dew point and relative humidity vapor-pressure relationships do not require that standard-pressure assumption, but concentration at another station pressure will differ.

Are the calculator results suitable for forecasts or engineering approval?

No. They are transparent estimates for checking observations, education, and early calculations. Forecasts, certified design, aviation, industrial control, and safety-critical work require the applicable official data, standards, instruments, and qualified review.

Heat index calculations from humidity or dew point

Heat index combines air temperature with moisture to estimate feels-like conditions under specific NWS assumptions.

How does the heat index calculator use dew point?

It first derives relative humidity from air temperature and dew point, then uses that RH in the National Weather Service heat-index procedure. The derived humidity is displayed so you can inspect the intermediate value.

Why can heat index differ in direct sunshine?

The NWS equation represents shaded, light-wind conditions. Full sunshine can make perceived conditions feel up to about 14°F hotter, while wind, activity, clothing, hydration, and health can further change individual heat stress.

When should I not rely on heat index alone?

Do not use it as the only measure for direct sun, heavy work, protective clothing, radiant heat, limited airflow, vehicles, or personal medical risk. Follow official warnings and the appropriate workplace or medical protocol when consequences are serious.
